Work In Canada
A Canada work permit visa is issued to eligible individuals to work in the country for a specific time period. It is a legal document which authorizes a foreign worker to work legally in Canada. Excluding certain exceptions, most foreign temporary workers require this legal document to work. A Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) might also be required to enter Canada depending on your country of residence or citizenship. There are two different types of work permits:
- Open Work Permit
- Employer Specific Work Permit
Open Work Permit
An open work permit is a work permit that is not job-specific. Open work permit allows you to work for any employer in Canada except the ones who have failed to comply with the employment standards or businesses who engage in sex trade such as strip clubs, escort services, or erotic massage parlors. You may be eligible for an open work permit if you:
- Are an international student who graduated from a designated learning institution and are eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program
- Are a student who’s no longer able to meet the costs of your studies (destitute student)
- Have an employer-specific work permit and are being abused or at risk of being abused in relation to your job in Canada
- Applied for permanent residence in Canada
- Are a dependent family member of someone who applied for permanent residence
- Are the spouse or common-law partner of a skilled worker or international student
- Are a refugee, refugee claimant, protected person or their family member
- Are a temporary resident permit holder
- Are a young worker participating in special programs
Employer Specific Work Permit
An employer-specific work permit legally allows a foreign worker to work for a specific employer for a certain period of time. These work permits are subject to a job offer by a Canadian employer supported by a positive LMIA which proves that there is no Canadian citizen or permanent resident available to do the job which is being offered. An employer-specific work permit allows you to work according to the conditions on your work permit, which include:
- the name of the employer you can work for
- how long you can work
- the location where you can work
